Maine Stoneware Pottery

About Us
Cabin Pottery is a wife-and-husband operation run by two native "Mainuhs." We (Andrea and Joe) grew up about ten miles apart, each of us not knowing that our life-long partner was in the neighboring town. We were married in 1994. Andrea, the artist of the pair, has enjoyed painting in both watercolor and oils for many years, but has found her second true love (after Joe, of course) in clay. Joe, a recent corporate drop-out, is the junior mud slinger of the pair and relieves Andrea of the business side of things.

Brief History
In the summer of 2000 we loaded up our 1985 Saab 900 with pottery, tied a display rack to the roof and headed for a local craft show in Bath, Maine. That is where it all started. I believe we took part in three craft shows in 2000. Our work was very well received, and by adding more shows and selling our wares in a few local stores over the next two years, Andrea was able to become self employed as a full-time potter in the spring of 2002! Joe continued to work full time in addition to the pottery biz in order to keep the fridge full. In December of 2002 Joe joined Andrea as a full-time part of the family business. It's all about the mud now!

Where We Made Our Pots Until April 2004
Well, we're currently in a transitional phase. In 2000 our operations consisted of just our dining room and part of the woodshed. In early summer of 2001 Joe entered the kitchen and saw Andrea disassembling the kitchen table--all Andrea said was "I need the space" and away it went.

By 2002 we needed all the space we could get. We built shelves in the remainder of the woodshed (firewood went to the basement) and believe it or not, the rest of the first floor was taken over (except our bathroom). We moved the living room upstairs and the spare bedroom went to storage. The space where the couch and TV once sat is now filled with drying racks.

So in short, we make pottery all over our house and use all available shed and outbuilding space for storage. We have high hopes of putting up a building dedicated to mud by 2004.

We've Moved!!!
Finally some room to breathe! We have leased a 40 by 60 foot two-story building in Edgecomb, Maine to make our pottery. We are living above the studio, so we usually are on site and hard at work. As of April 2004 we are located at 186 River Road in Edgecomb, Maine. In August of the same year we opened a gallery and started giving tours of our studio area. We love our new space and now have four times the production area we were working in before the move! If you plan to be in the area, give us a jingle to be sure we are home. June through December we are usually here weekdays and weekends with the exception of show days. (We can also schedule evening visits for the 9 to fivers.) We hope you stop by to check out our new digs!

The Pots
We both love what we do and take great pride in our work. All our pots are handmade and wheel-thrown stoneware, made using both white and brown clays. All are microwave- and dishwasher-safe, making them functional as well as attractive.

Our pots with unglazed surfaces are created by hand-painting a liquid wax in the image of a moose, lobster, dragonfly, fish or maple leaf (no iron-ons or decals here).

The winter tree collection (black leafless trees on white stoneware covered by a shimmering glaze) is all hand-painted. Andrea hand-paints every tree, so no two are exactly alike (no stencils here either)--each is an original work. We hope those who purchase our pots enjoy using them as much as we enjoy creating them.

We hope you enjoy our gallery!
